From a surprise at birth to confidence in the classroom today, Peter’s story shows how access to cleft care helped him thrive in school and how his family move beyond stigma and uncertainty.
In Thika, Kenya, Joseph and his wife, Esther, welcomed their first child, Peter, at a hospital during a rainstorm that knocked out the power. In the darkness, the family could not see him clearly. When the lights finally came back on, they discovered that their son had a cleft lip and palate. With no family history of the condition, Joseph describes feeling shocked and overwhelmed, uncertain about what the diagnosis meant for his son’s future.
When Miguel held his newborn daughter, Margaret, for the first time, he saw something that he had spent a lifetime learning to carry. She had a cleft condition, just like him.
Margaret was born with a cleft condition in Lima, Peru. Her parents, Melina and Miguel, are building a life together in San Martin de Porras, just north of the city. When they learned they were expecting, they wanted one thing for their daughter: a healthy future full of possibilities.
For Miguel, that hope was deeply personal. Born with a cleft condition himself, he knew what it meant to grow up navigating a world that did not always make room for someone with a cleft . . . . .
Every three minutes, a child with a cleft lip or palate is born. These children often live a tough life, having to endure harassment and isolation.
Operation Smile performs about 15,000 surgeries a year, improving the lives of just as many children all over the world. For us this is a smart choice for everyday healthcare and why Benvue International has supported Operation Smile.
